Weigh in report, and question for big losers

Today was my weigh in day at Weight Watchers, I managed to stay on track this week and I had high hopes. I stayed within my points every day, only used 9 of my weekly points and earned 46 activity points. I was rewarded with a loss of 1.8 pounds, which is huge for me because I very often lose a half pound or less per week even on great, on-program weeks. That puts my total weight loss at 94.2 pounds with 5.8 pounds to go until I hit my goal weight.
An odd thing has happened today, I'm hoping to get some feedback from those of you on this same journey about it. Today at work, and again twice tonight when I went to dinner with some alumnus from my high school, people have (with a very sincere, concerned tone in their voice) said "you've lost TOO much weight- you need to stop!" One of my classmates (who easily weighs 10 to 15 pounds less than me) said, "really, you are too skinny and it's not good". I don't get it- by NO means am I anywhere near skinny- for that matter, I'm still 2.8 pounds from the HIGH end of my healthy weight range on both Weight Watchers and the BMI charts. Honestly, I am a hobbit-like 5 foot 4 inches tall and (as of tonight) I weigh 148 pounds so I clearly have a good 15 to 20 pounds before any reasonable person could suggest that I weigh too little. Why do people feel compelled to suggest that I've gone to far when I haven't even reached a high end healthy weight? I just don't get people sometimes....
Tomorrow we are leaving for a weekend away at a retreat for the families of children who have heart defects, all meals will be provided so on-plan eating will be a bit of a challenge but there is lots of fresh fruit and a salad bar...between that and the WW smoothie mix and green tea w/ mint that I'm bringing it shouldn't kill my week. There will be lots of walking around and outdoor activities (and dancing, woo!) so with a little bit of care things should be just fine on the weight loss front.

  1. You will be fine and I dont know why people do that its not like you look like you have an eating disorder or something. But your 5 4? then you are only 2 lbs away from your max weight (146 lbs) and your min would be 117 lbs. I think you look amazing dont worry about what anyone says. all that matters is how you feel and where you want to be. Keep going strong. Good luck!

  2. I had people telling me that I was too thin (same thing - what??? I weighed 146 at 5'1"!!!) - I think it was a combination of two things - first, it takes a while for a weight loss to settle in, and I think I did look a little gaunt, especially in the face and collar bones. Second, some people are so used to the overweight us, that the normal-size person looks too small to them. It is a weird thing to hear, and I know how odd it can make you feel...but just keep doing what's right for you and it'll be fine.

  3. Wow! Congrats on the loss, and for being so close to goal. I think Shelley is right about the comments from people. I would add just one thing. I think that people who are our family and friends, have been used to the overweight us and the fact that we have found our niche in our friendships, our work life, as overweight people. When the weight is gone, we look different, we feel different, and we may act somewhat differently from our old overweight selves. That upsets the balance of the relationships in our lives and can throw others off guard. They just need to get used to you as a thin person. Keep up the amazing work! You're doing just great!

  4. Sounds like a fun weekend. Sherrie, you have done an amazing job losing your weight and you've become a totally new, braver person as well. You've not only "lost"...you've "gained" so much too.
    Whatta journey you've had!

  5. Sometimes I think people are reacting to the way faces can look different with significant weight loss. The face is what people see the most, and when there has been a big change in weight, the face often looks dramatically different. Perhaps it can startle people if they haven't seen you in a while. I personally think you look fab, and I recommend you tune out the nay-sayers. Reach your goal, and work to maintain!

  6. I think people losing weight makes those around them question their own comfort zone. Sort of upsets the status quo at times. For example, I have an aquaintance who has always been the "skinny pretty" one and that is how she sees herself. It is scary to her in an odd way when people around her change. I find I have to be careful around her. On the other hand a life long friend (who truly is both skinny and pretty) encourages me, tries every recipe I find that looks good, etc. The change doesn't upset her in the least.

You look great! Do what you have to do for yourself and eventually others will get used to the "new" you.

  7. Congratulations on your weight loss. Remarkably enough I had the same reaction from some people. I weighed 145 when I reached my goal, I now weigh 139. You would have thought I was 102 pounds dripping wet the way some people reacted. Mind you these were mostly people who weighed a good 10 pounds less than I did. I would just look at them like are you kidding me. Don't let those naysayers discourage you. Maybe they are simply jealous that you look so beautiful.

  8. Wow, me and Shelley are so alike its eery. I was going to say the exact same thing to you. I've never seen it written anywhere, but that is my observation in myself as well as other people.
